Clear aligners for adults: an honest timeline
How long treatment really takes, what the first weeks feel like and the habits that decide whether you finish on schedule.
Adults choose clear aligners for many reasons: crowding that returned after teenage braces, a gap that has slowly widened, or preparation for veneers. Whatever the reason, the first question is almost always how long it will take. The answer depends on your teeth, but it depends even more on your habits. Here is what a realistic timeline looks like.
Before treatment: two to three weeks
Treatment starts with a 3D scan, photographs and an exam to confirm your gums and teeth are healthy enough for movement. Any cavities or gum inflammation are treated first. We then build a digital plan showing every stage of movement, and you can review a simulation of the expected result before you commit.
Aligners are manufactured from that plan and usually arrive within two to three weeks.
Weeks one and two: adjusting
On the day you receive your first aligners, we may place small tooth-colored attachments on a few teeth. These act like handles that help the trays grip and rotate teeth accurately. Expect a day or two of pressure with each new set, and a slight lisp for the first few days while your tongue adapts. Both fade quickly.
- Wear aligners 20 to 22 hours a day, removing them only to eat and brush.
- Drink only water while trays are in.
- Brush before putting trays back in, so food is not held against enamel.
- Keep your previous set as a backup in case a tray is lost.
Months one to six: steady progress
Most patients change to a new set every one or two weeks. You will check in with us virtually by sending photos through a secure app, and visit the studio every eight to ten weeks so we can confirm teeth are tracking as planned. Mild crowding cases are often complete in four to six months.
The plan is precise. The variable is wear time. Patients who wear trays consistently almost always finish when we predict.
Months six to fourteen: more complex movement
Cases that involve bite correction, significant rotation or closing larger spaces take longer, typically nine to fourteen months. Toward the end, many patients need a short series of refinement aligners to perfect details such as edge alignment. Refinements are normal and are included in comprehensive plans.
After treatment: retention for life
Teeth naturally drift after they move, which is exactly why so many adults who had braces as teenagers end up in our chair. Once treatment is complete, you will wear custom retainers every night. Nighttime wear is a small habit that protects a meaningful investment.
What slows treatment down
- Wearing aligners fewer than 20 hours a day.
- Skipping ahead to new trays before teeth have tracked.
- Lost attachments that are not replaced promptly.
- Untreated gum inflammation, which can make movement less predictable.
Planning with the finish in mind
